Historical Facts About Raleigh


Raleigh is a planned city of North Carolina, and it is specifically designed to serve as the capital of the state. Isaac Hunter and Joel Lane purchased large farmland in the area around their homes, and started operating taverns for the travelers which was called as the Wake Crossroads. The city was officially established in 1792 and named after Sir Walter Raleigh who was the sponsor of the colony of Roanoke.

It is capital of the state of North Carolina and Wake County. It is known as the city of Oaks because of its many oak trees. In 1794, the first general assembly of the North Carolina General Assembly took place at Raleigh. The city of Raleigh was destroyed in 1831 by fire and the reconstruction process took place after two years later and the work of reconstruction was completed in 1840.

The economy of the city depends mainly on industries which include telecommunications, apparel, food and various medical and pharmaceutical products.

The city council of Raleigh operates under an eight member committee which is headed by the Mayor. According to the 2000 census, the population of the city is around 1,87,941 people.
